Abstrakt: The influence of low-lying discrete states on the partition function for electron capture and beta decay rates in stellar conditions is discussed. Calculations are carried out for [sup 56]Fe, [sup 57]Fe, [sup 59]Co and [sup 60]Co. Experimental data and different level densities are used. We show that by using a simple but consistent approximation to calculate the nuclear partition function, it is possible to modify significantly the electron capture and beta decay rates.
