Random and block copolymers of perfluorooctyl ethyl methacrylate (FMA) and eicosanyl methacrylate (EIMA) were synthesized. Organo-soluble polymers with varying amounts of the fluorinated comonomer were obtained with conventional radical polymerization or with atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Both random and block copolymers exhibit high surface activity in toluene and have critical micelle concentrations (CMC) 0.5 wt%. Random copolymers with FMA content above 30 wt% form aggregates in the order of 10 nm in diameter in toluene above CMC, while block copolymers with similar overall constitution form aggregates of the order of 100 nm in diameter under similar conditions. The aggregates formed in block copolymer solutions were found to reorganize upon heating into smaller, spherical aggregates of 40 nm in diameter. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
