Metal sequestration with EDTA nullified the toxicity of potential environmentally hazardous trace metal ions, i.e. Mn[sup 2+], Pb[sup 2+], Cd[sup 2+] and Hg[sup 2+] etc. Metal chelation in the case of Mn[sup 2+], Pb[sup 2+], Cd[sup 2+] and Hg[sup 2+] remarkably increased the concentration of trace ions required to cause 50 percent mortality (the median tolerance limit value). It is suggested that other naturally occurring and commercially available chelating agents, like humic acid and d-pencillamine, could effectively be used as chelating agents for the detoxification and sequestering of persistent trace metal ions like Arsenic (As[sup 3+]).
