Abstrakt: The author discusses three categories he has identified among U.S. educators regarding their strategies for incorporating their religious upbringing into education during what is known as the progressive era of education. The author categorizes educators during this period as Integrators, Reinterpreters, and Deniers, and states that teachers are categorized depending on how they applied their individual religious upbringing to classroom instruction. The article analyzes the growth of religion in the U.S. during the period of 1860 to 1906 and the simultaneous critiques of religious teachings from biological theorist Charles Darwin and deconstructionist philosophies such as Biblical Higher Criticism. The author also discusses the progressive movement as a secularized religion.
