The article discusses the civic education program administered by U.S. educator Laura Donnan at Shortridge High School in Indianapolis, Indiana, between 1883 and 1928. The author describes Donnan's educational background, including her degrees from the Normal School in Indianapolis and the University of Michigan, as well as the popularity she enjoyed among students for her pedagogy and sponsorship of extracurricular activities such as the Shortridge Senate, the John Quincy Adams Club, and the Shortridge Oratorical Society. The article details an address Donnan delivered to the annual meeting of the National Education Association (NEA) in 1889 entitled "The High School and the Citizen." Donnan's administrative abilities, attention to multiculturalism, and moral development are analyzed. |
