Efforts to create a memorial to a priest murdered for his activities in Solidarity targeted one of the oldest streets in the Warsaw neighborhood of Zoliborz for renaming. Tensions rose as the post-war generation strove to fix its heroes in Polish social memory while some older residents sought to retain a sense of continuity in a city largely destroyed during World War II. The controversy over the renaming of Capital Street reveals the diverse memories of those who lived through the war, the Polish People's Republic and the movement that brought about the demise of Communism.
