Abstrakt: The national pavilions at the Exposition internationale des arts et des techniques dans la vie moderne in Paris in 1937 offer many examples of the way in which states both conceived of and orchestrated the interrelations between text, image, and space for propagandistic purposes. This essay focuses upon the use and efficacy of political symbolism and slogans within the German, Soviet, and Spanish pavilions, from the perspective that the preference for certain idioms, architectural or otherwise, and the inclusion, or studied avoidance, of overt political slogans, were indicative of the style in which individual nations sought to project themselves.
