Criminal justice professionals have continued to ignore, dismiss, or blame victims of intimate partner sexual assault, despite the fact that the marital exemption is no longer codified. Many perpetrators of partner sexual assault hide behind a "nice guy" persona, committing more assaults than rapists who are out in the community. Unfortunately, society often fails to hold perpetrators of marital abuse responsible for their actions, and victims may not even recognize the violence as sexual assault. This article describes what prosecutors and community advocates can do to create awareness and accountability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
