Abstrakt: The profession of nursing is evolving from a knowledge base of traditions to a rational and tested foundation. Fitzpatrick, Whall, Johnston, and Floyd (1982) concluded, "As nursing continues to develop its own approaches to person, environment, and health, a distinctive theoretical base of nursing practice becomes more evident" (p. vi). This article examines the theoretical foundation of nursing as described by practicing nurses. Of the 27 nurses participating in the study, 22% (6) articulated a conceptual model containing the concepts of person, environment, health, and nursing. Seventeen nurses (63%) who did not develop a conceptual model described some concepts or schools of thought guiding their practice. Possible bases for the lack of articulation are discussed.
