The article describes the case in Maine of a 70-year-old man suspected of having the hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). The patient had a 5-day history of fatigue, decreased appetite, and a progressive shortness of breath. He was taken to a tertiary-care facility where he was treated and examined with confirmation that he had the Hantavirus RNA in his blood. The patient was discharged after comprehensive treatment and is recovering. HPS is caused by the hantavirus infection and is transmitted to humans via exposure to infected rodents. |
