The article examines the rise of an automobile culture in the Soviet Russian Federation through an examination of the work of the Society for Facilitating the Development of Automobilism and Improving Roads in the RSFSR, or the Avtodor Society. More specifically, the author explains how the Society worked to incorporate peasants, women, and children into this culture and, therefore, into Soviet life in general. The ways in which Avtodor combined Bolshevik ideology and technical skill when promoting the development of automobile technology, driving, and road improvements are explored as well. |
