The article presents views of various readers on the essay "The Foundation and the Academy," written by Stephen Tonsor. According to a reader, Daniel Bell, Tonsor is quite right to stress the importance of intellectuals to the modern conservative movement. But Bell think he overdoes it, in at least two respects. First, he strains credulity when he dates modern conservatism from the mid-1950s. Moreover, Tonsor is mistaken in assuming that intellectuals, because they are primarily concerned with ideas, are the primary source of ideas. |
