Abstrakt: | A biography of Pope Innocent XI is presented. Born Bernedetto Odescalchi on May 19, 1611 in Como, Italy, he was raised in a wealthy family and was educated by the Jesuits. While the 17th century is often seen as a weak point in the history of the Roman Catholic Church, Innocent XI's papacy reaffirmed the power of the office. He oversaw social and financial reform within the Church, combated that authority of French king Louis XIV and ousted the Turks from Vienna, Austria in 1683. |
