The article presents a report which summarizes the findings associated with reduced susceptibility to azithromycin in San Diego County, California in 2009. Clinicians treating cephalosporin-allergic patients with a 2 gram dose of azithromycin for uncomplicated gonorrhea are advised to obtain tests of cure after treatment and to recommend sexual abstinence. Continued surveillance for antibiotic resistance and effective control efforts are said to be important factors for the prevention of gonorrhea. |
