The article examines the working conditions faced by German émigré professors in Turkey during Germany's period of Nazi government, with primary focus given to former university students' opinions of these academics. Therefore, the authors highly emphasize the importance of oral history methodology to their work, as much information came from interviews of former students of Ankara University in Ankara, Turkey, and note the pitfalls of collective memory. Turkish nationalism's effects on the employment of these German-speaking professors is then detailed. It is concluded that Turkey, prior to the rise of nationalism, offered adequate working conditions for these professors. |
