This section of "Performances of the Sacred in Late Medieval and Early Modern England" examines the concept of martyrdom as reflected in John Foxe's "Actes and Monuments of these latter and perilous dayes, touching matters of the Church." Also known as the "Book of Martyrs," Foxe's literary work is considered the most important book during the period. The author contemplates on how martyrdom became a national issue in the book, and looks at how it could have been replicated in Shakespearean and Elizabethan literature. |
