Abstrakt: Upon reviewing the literature on the effectiveness of treatment programs for men who are violent towards their partners, including reports from six pilot projects funded by the Correctional Service of Canada, the authors suggest that it would be worthwhile to try similar programs with prison inmates. This paper suggests that consciousness-raising strategies can be used to motivate incarcerated men to change, whereas coercion might be used with those clients who are the most at risk of committing acts of family violence. Because of the destructive impact of violence on victims, programs should aim for the elimination of all forms of violence, although a high rate of recidivism is likely to occur amongst the prison clientele. In the proposed model, treatment is part of a combined approach which also includes surveillance, return to prison when necessary and the availability of services to the victims.
