The techniques to generate Lamb waves are reviewed, including the variable angle wedge and comb transducer methods. As an alternative, it is shown that Lamb waves can be generated and tuned by a linear array with an appropriately predetermined time delay profile. Compared with other approaches, this technique seems convenient and robust, capable of tuning desired Lamb modes. The tuning scheme can be determined either from an “a priori” knowledge of the dispersion characteristics or in an adaptive fashion. A theoretical model was developed to study the behavior of phase-tuning and some experimental results for tuning the Lamb modes in a thin aluminum plate are presented. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
