Recently there has been a significant increase in the application of multi-sensor systems in different fields, such as robot navigation and nondestructive evaluation. These systems may consist of either identical or similar sensors, or sensors that are based upon different physical principles such as radiography, ultrasonics, and thermal imaging. The data fusion results in a single image, which contains the information obtained from the different sensors, to help in decision-making. The data fusion procedure may reveal new items or provide additional information on items that had already been identified by the system. This experimental study proposes a method for the fusion of thermal and visual images, and proves its feasibility. The method is based upon the replacement of the color and/or the texture of areas in the visual images, that are identified as relatively hot by means of the thermal images. In the experiment, we took optical and thermal images of a set-up consisting of glasses and cups containing water at various temperatures. While the optical images showed all the glasses, the thermal images contained the information about the temperature of the water in each glass or cup. This information was fused into the optical images to obtain modified pictures that exhibit both the glasses and cups, and the temperature of the water contained in each of them. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
