Abstrakt: An encyclopedia entry for U.S. General Robert Edmund Lee is presented. He was born in Westmoreland, Virginia in 1806 and graduated at the top of his class at West Point in 1829. He became a brigadier-general in the Confederate army in July 1861 whose task was to defend Richmond. He became prominent during the Civil War, but surrendered his army to General Ulysses Grant on April 9, 1865. He died on October 12, 1870.
