Abstrakt: Offender employment interventions play a prominent role in corrections, yet to date, there is no conclusive evidence for the effectiveness of employment programs in reducing recidivism (Pearson & Lipton, 1999). Fabiano (2000) posits the lack of an individualized approach to program allocation and participation as an explanation for the inability of programs to demonstrate a consistent positive impact on offender outcomes. This paper explores the assessment of offender needs in an employment context, and proposes a dynamic strategy to complement existing approaches that tend to focus on static factors (Gillis, 2000a). Finally, the paper includes exploration of the concept of employment readiness within the context of stages of change (Prochaska & Diclemente, 1982), incorporating motivation as an important construct that merits systematic attention in the examination of factors that contribute to employment outcomes for offenders.
