The article examines the environmental fate and safety of nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPE). NPE is a type of alkyphenol ethoxylates (APE). Used in institutional and household cleaning products and industrial processes, APE are non-ionic surfactants that have been popular due to their effectiveness, economy and ease of handling. Examples of products that contain NPE include those formulated for fiber sizing, spinning and weaving, fabric dyeing, scouring and washing, water-based paints, inks and adhesives. The Alkyphenol and Ethoxylates (APE) Panel was formed in 1987 to evaluate published information on NPE environmental fate and effects, communicate with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and sponsor studies for risk assessment. |
