Abstrakt: The article deals with new mercantilism that will rise in the 1980s following a period of free trade that enabled multinational firms to grow. It cites the market restraints being adopted by nations under the new mercantilism such as manipulation of currencies and voluntary export-control deals. U.S. Treasury Under Secretary C. Fred Bergsten explains the implications of controlling the investment flow through incentives and performance requirements. Also noted is the challenge to be faced by such firms as they invest in least developed countries (LDC).
