This section presents abstracts of research and articles on economics, published in the December 1966 issue of the Journal of Economic Abstracts. The article Big Steel, Invention and Innovation by W. Adams and J. B. Dirlam tests the hypothesis attributed to Schumpeter that firms have to be protected by some degree of monopoly--to have some room to maneuver--in order to bring about massive innovations, and therefore that more industrial concentration would increase innovation and progress. In the paper Demand and Supply in Freight Transportation, authors H. Benishay and G. R. Whitaker Jr. present the results of a preliminary investigation of the market structure of the common carrier freight transportation industry. Meanwhile, N. R. Collins and L. E. Preston analyze the relationship between price minus direct cost as a percent of price and 4-firm concentration, geographic dispersion of markets, capital-output ratio, and rate of industry growth in the article Concentration and Price-Cost Margins in Food Manufacturing Industries. W. S. Connor's paper, Competition and Performance of the Midwestern Coal Industry, reviews Reed Moyer's analysis of the Midwestern coal industry and examines the implications of his view that the elimination of excess capacity has been a major factor leading to improved market performance. |
