Abstrakt: Penicilloyl-specific IgM and IgG antibodies in 592 sera from patients from birth to old age were studied, mainly because of the possibility of an allergic reaction to penicillin. Some had no history of penicillin allergy. In cluded were 69 children from birth up to I year. A hemagglutination assay for antibodies was used. Of all patients 64% had BPO-IgM antibodies, 13% had BPO-IgG antibodies, 16%had no BPO antibodies, and 5% had a mixture. In the first year approximately half the babies had BPO-IgM antibodies; only 1% had BPO-lgS. In cord sera 10% had BPO-IgM antibodies due to prenatal exposure and intrauterine synthesis. BPO-IgG antibodies were significantly higher than BPO-IgM antibodies across all age groups. In patients over 70, there is a leveling off in titer of antibodies which could reflect decreased exposure to penicillin rather than diminished antibody production. Aging does not seem to protect against allergic reactions to penicillin. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
