Abstrakt: Current research suggests that one of the limiting factors in boys' engagement with literature is their narrow perception of masculinity, and the idea that reading and the study of English are "girly" activities. One way of broadening their concept of what is acceptable in a masculine environment may be through the critical analysis of masculinity in literature. Qualitative data from surveys, interviews and independent writing was examined for changes in attitudes to masculinity after a literature study. The attitudes within the two groups examined were fairly stereotypical and dominated by a strong sporting bias. The surveys indicated few changes in attitudes after the literature study but this was contradicted by the other data that showed that boys perceived "cracks" in the stereotypes wizen they examined masculinity in a critical way. Existing stereotypical attitudes to masculinity can be challenged by a critical examination of these concepts through the medium of literature studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
