The present essay contains findings from the author's current research into questions of the comprehension of the literary text. The concept of the lacuna has been used here to determine what factors can make that comprehension more difficult. This term is commonly used in Soviet scholarship to refer to cases where the content and meaning of different languages and cultures do not coincide and are manifested in the course of intercultural contact-for example, in translations, comparative analysis, etc. [1-7]. According to this interpretation, lacunae may be considered factors which hinder successful communication between the representatives of different linguistic and cultural communities. A particular aspect of the approach used in this study to determine and analyze lacunae is that the research is based primarily on texts of a given culture which reveal its characteristic verbal and nonverbal features. Intercultural communication frequently and typically occurs by means of texts, primarily literary texts. The lacunae encountered by the reader of a text from another culture are, on the one hand, a signal of the particular features of the culture which created that text (in comparison to the reader's own culture) and, on the other hand, a hindrance to his full comprehension of it.
