By tradition, we hold meetings at the beginning of the school year. But the schools are experiencing such an important time in their history that at Sh. Amonashvili's suggestion we decided to get together without delay. The meeting was held in Moscow at the beginning of March 1988. We were able to enlarge the composition of the participants: we invited Evgenii Borisovich Kurkin, the director of Tula School No. 20, a man who has a keen perception of the school system today and has himself walked the thorny path of the experimental educators. His ideas about the organization of the upbringing community and the upbringing milieu at the district and city level, as well as his experiments in this field, are well known to teachers. And, of course, no introduction is needed for Igor' Petrovich Ivanov, the Leningrad scholar. We made a special trip to Leningrad to see him, and he took part in preparing the report published below.
