The article focuses on the investigation made to the ice-skating arena in Seattle, Washington, wherein children had been ill. It was suspected initially that the children had food-borne illnesses, but has failed to show any evidence on the cause. A large ice-resurfacing machine at the rink, which is powered by a propane-fueled engine, was seen during the inspection. As ventilation of the rink was inadequate, it has been found out that the level of carbon monoxide inside the premises is relatively high. Meanwhile, a program was initiated to monitor carbon monoxide levels in all of the ice-skating arenas as a result of the survey. In addition, it has been suggested that the best solution to the problem of carbon monoxide emissions is the use of electrically-powered ice-resurfacing machine. |
