Direct effects of negative energy states on atomic parameters are in general extremely weak and can be neglected. More precisely, it is found that the no-pair relativistic Hamiltonian is very precise for calculations of the energy and electric multipole operators. Only in certain cases of magnetic dipole transition rates is this approximation insufficient. We discuss the calculations of magnetic dipole transition rates in comparison with existing measurements, and the progress of our measurements in helium between two excited triplet states; we also discuss the NES effects and possible measurements in ns -> (n+1)s transitions in the alkalis.
