Abstrakt: The article presents a study which evaluates the impact of dietary fat intake on incidence and severity of migraine headache. The study used a one group retest, posttest protocol. The study protocol was approved by the Institutional Review Board of Lorna Linda University, and each subject signed an informed consent form before beginning the study. The study demonstrates that counseling volunteers who suffer from chronic migraine headaches to reduce their intake of fat was associated with significant decreases in headache frequency, intensity, and duration and medication intake. The reported diets changed dramatically. The Validity of the self-reported diet histories is supported by both physical measurements of weight loss and reduction in percent body fat and lower blood lipids. Besides fat intake, intake of many nutrients and minerals also changed. Thus, one cannot definitively conclude that the reduction in reported migraine headaches was caused by lowered fat consumption alone. Supporting evidence for this hypothesis, however, comes from the significant association of headache frequency with fat intake at baseline. The age of the study subjects was representative of the general population who suffer from migraine headache.
