Abstrakt: The double positioning of gold particles grown on vacuum-cleaved surfaces of molybdenite is observed by electron microscopy and discussed in connection with nucleation. Two kinds of surface treatment are carried out. One is the heat treatment at 500°C in an oxygen atmosphere. In the other, the molybdenite with a previously formed oxide layer is heated in an ultra-high vacuum at 500°C. Through the observation of gold particles grown on them, the structures of the treated surfaces are clarified. It is found that the gold particles grown on the treated surfaces at −180°C have the double positioning even with a thickness of a few atoms. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
