Abstrakt: The article discusses the significant contributions of National Semiconductor Corp. director Robert J. Widlar to the semiconductor industry. The growing sales earned by the linear integrated circuits (IC) that he invented are described, noting that such IC technology will soon be utilized by a wide range of electronic control systems. A comparison between digital IC and linear IC is presented, with emphasis on the varied functions and capabilities of linear IC. The success of the operational amplifier or "op-amp" created by Widlar is also noted.
