The article studies marriage as a means of social reproduction in the city of Albacete, Spain during the second half of the 18th century and the early 19th century. In particular, it looks at marriage alliances formed between merchant families and the city's political elite. The article points out the tensions between interests at different levels, including the desires of the marriage candidates, their families, and their social groups, at a time when Spain was undergoing significant social and political change. |
