Abstrakt: This study examines verbal justifications in conversations between children and adults in four cases from the CHILDES database, from the age of 2;6 to 4;11 longitudinally. Monthly transcripts were searched for justifications, which were coded for their discourse context and divided into three age groupings. Adults produced more justifications than children during the 2;6 to 2;11 age grouping, but by 3;0 to 3;11, there was no significant difference between them. Conflicts were an important discourse context for justifications during the 2;6 to 2;11 age grouping, during the third year, questions as the discourse motivators increased, and during the 4;0 to 4;11 age grouping, justifications were mostly self-expansions. There were few sequences of justifications from 2;6 to 2;11; this changed in the third year with children’s increased questions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
