For three consecutive evenings in July 1719, there was rioting in one of the very poorest districts of Stockholm. Several hundred people - soldiers, sailors and artisans mainly -- from the lower classes had gathered to attack and destroy a total of eleven houses in the precincts round about the two streets Stora and Lilla Glasbruksgatan (the "Glassworks Streets") in the eastern part of the Södermalm district (south Stockholm). The authorities' reaction during the riots was one of wait and see; they were able to arrest only a few people on the spot, and basically no attempt was made to restrain the mob. On the other hand a thorough investigation took place afterwards, as a result of which nearly 40 people received strikingly harsh sentences. 1,1 all probability every one of the houses attacked also served as a covert tavern and brothel. These events have been dubbed the Södermalm Riots. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
