Abstrakt: The article examines how children learn language through incidental teaching. The authors based their study on a research conducted with preschoolers when they wanted to teach them the names of colors in small groups. Another study they conducted showed that the use of nouns and compounds sentences increased during free play. According to the authors, the precess of incidental teaching involves three elements, such as the teacher's initiation and its consequences and the teacher's request of elaboration. The article concludes that it's very important for the teacher to get lots of initiations, so he has more opportunities to confirm how language is used by the child. Several examples are presented and several theories are discussed.
