Hyperbilirubinemia, i.e. an excess of bilirubin in the blood serum, can be treated by irradiating the patients with blue light. Calculations are carried out in the paper to evaluate some new blue fluorescent lamps for their effectiveness in the phototherapy of hyperbilirubinemia. The use of lamps with Sr2P2O7-Eu2+ leads to several important advantages over existing fluorescent lamps; the number of lamps can be reduced, diminishing the danger of hyperthermia, and because the light is a very deep blue, the discomfort encountered is less than with blue lamps. Some considerations are given of the construction of lamp luminaires for phototherapy units. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER] |
