According to the stigma theory, as formulated by the authors, deviant behavior may be the outcome of a negative identity applied to a person by his (or her) social environment. The purpose of the present study was to test this theory on prostitutes in Israel. Sixty-seven prostitutes and a comparison group of a similar size were interviewed and asked about their relationships with their families. The findings tend to confirm the hypotheses: Prostitution was associated to negative images cast by the father, to a sense of powerlessness, and to social isolation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
