Abstrakt: Previous studies of the effects of several familial variables on the development of self-esteem have revealed that for participants who are of adolescent age or younger, the following variables are positively related to their self-esteem: (a) parental nurturance, (b) mother's self-esteem, and (c) the marital satisfaction of the parents. These studies also revealed a negative relationship between family size and children's self-esteem. In the present study, the variables of parents' self-esteem, parents' marital satisfaction, and family size were not related to the college-age participants' self-esteem; only the relationship between parental nurturance and self-esteem was significant. Regression analyses revealed that mother's nurturance and father's nurturance together yielded an r² value of 33%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
