The author responds to the article "Legitimating Alien Rule" by Michael Hechter which appears in this issue. He considers how ethnic and religious diversity, assimilation, and plurality in contemporary societies have changed throughout the twentieth century. He argues that Hechter's definition of alien rule is too broad and explores subjects including rights of naturalized citizens in the U.S., issues associated with colonialism and accountability, and issues with democracy and new-nations in the European Union. |
