The article presents a profile of educational reform activist John Lawrence Childs and examines ways in which his beliefs regarding education were influenced by his Christian religious upbringing and the philosophical belief of experimentalism. It outlines his early education in the Methodist church, explores how University of Wisconsin professors Richard T. Ely and John R. Commons influenced his ideas on progressive social reforms, and discusses how his affiliation with the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) led to his work as a Christian missionary in China. It then chronicles how Childs' beliefs on mission work were altered through his experiences in China and his encounters with educational reformer John Dewey, leading to his belief in experimentalist philosophy. |
