Abstrakt: The introduction of a weekly group for psychiatrically disturbed mothers and their pre-school children in a Psychiatric Day Hospital is described. Theoretical consideration is given to the fact that psychiatric illness in parents gives rise to increased risk of disturbance in their children. The aims of the group are to increase mothering skills and to improve the mother-child relationship. The techniques used, derived from experience with group psychotherapy and educative playgroups, is described. It is illustrated by clinical case studies of two mothers and their children.
