The article discusses the participation of mariners from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia in the sealing fleets that worked the Bering Sea region out of the port of Victoria, British Columbia, which began in the 1880s. Subjects considered include sealer captains Matthew Ryan, Alex MacLean, and Dan MacLean; the Bering Sea dispute; and the North Pacific Fur Seal Convention of 1911. The influence of the Breton sealers on literature is considered which includes the books "The Sea-Wolf" by Jack London, "Wooden Ships and Iron Men" by Frederick William Wallace, and "Far Gold" by Arthur Hunt Chute. |
