The ability of a surbing sample to transfer heat of sorption has been calculated for vapor-phase sorption. In the presence of vapor at pressures > 1 mm Hg. conduction is the major mode of heat transfer for a sample consisting of a single piece of sorbent. For fibrous samples, the effective surface for heat transfer is less than the sorbing surface, and radiation may become comparable with conduction as a means of heat transfer, while heat transfer by natural convection is negligible. At zero vapor pressure radiative heat transfer is the most important. Factors affecting the rate of heat transfer are the size of the sorption vessel, the mass and the shape of the sorbing sample, the distribution of serbing surface, and the packing density. The calculations have been applied to the keratm-water system, and the efficiency of heat transfer for differing fiber assemblies has been expressed as the permissible rate of water sorption that will allow temperature variations to be kept within 1°C.
