The timing of bilateral inguinal hernia repair and the procedure of choice remains controversial. To present our experience in simultaneous bilateral inguinal hernia repair using the Rutkow-Robbins procedure (plug-mesh). 36 male patients with bilateral hernia were repaired with Rutkow-Robbins procedure between 2004 and 2007; their mean age was 64 years (range 32–78 years). Two patients had a history of constipation; 4 were obese; 4 had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and 7 had prostatism. The patients were followed up for a period from 6 months to 2 years. Direct hernia was present in 11 patients, indirect in 14, direct and indirect components on one or both sides in 4, bilateral recurrence in 2 and unilateral recurrence in 5 patients. The procedures took place under general anesthesia in 5 patients and under spinal in 31. A Foley catheter was placed in all the patients prior to the operation. The mean duration of hospitalization was 2.8 days. Scrotal haematomas occurred in 2 patients. No need for mesh removal postoperatively was recorded. None of the patients had hernia recurrence. The Rutkow-Robbins procedure in simultaneous bilateral inguinal hernia repair seems to have low recurrence and complication rates. Additionally, it is a low cost procedure [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
