Abstrakt: The article highlights the contributions of ornithologist Tom R. Howell to the history of Nicaraguan ornithology, particularly the "Checklist of the Birds of Nicaragua." Howell sent 352 specimens to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) from his examination of the bird collection by Father Bernardo Ponsol, a Spanish Jesuit who was the director of the Colegio Centro America in Granada, Nicaragua. He also summarized and collected the notes by ornithologist James Silliman, who accumulated information on the birds of coastal areas near León. Howell's trips to Nicaragua produced a collection of over 2,000 bird skins deposited at UCLA. His other unpublished publications also formed the backbone of the Nicaraguan ornithology.
