The article discusses the use of benzodiazepines to treat a variety neuropsychiatric conditions. It notes that Benzedrine, which benefits patients suffering from epilepsy or spasmodic disorders, allowed the discontinuation of potentially lethal and addicting barbiturates. Benzodiazepines are also used to treat insomnia because of their anxiolytic and hypnotic properties. Benzodiazepines came into use in the 1960s but in the 1980s, the dangers of this medication were described in "I'm Dancing as Fast as I Can," autobiography of Barbara Gordon. |
