The article focuses on Shikan meditation, a form of meditation that originated from the sixth-century monk Chih-i and which was adapted by the Japanese Tendai school. It is a hybrid of two traditional meditation forms, the samatha for cultivating calm and the vipassana for cultivating insight. Using the breath as a meditation object is part of Chih-i's concentration meditation process, which aims to achieve "dhyanas" or states of deep concentration and mind unification. Shikan meditation is one of the ways of attaining nirvana or freedom from suffering. |
