Abstrakt: The article discusses the defense of Cincinnati, Ohio led by U.S. Civil War General Lew Wallace during the late summer and autumn of 1862. The organization of area citizens to defend the city, Wallace's use of free black men to construct defensive works, and his mobilization of armed citizens, or Squirrel Hunters, to aid in the city's defense are examined. The defense of the Ohio River and the protection of Cincinnati from Confederate troops are also explored.
